On May 23, Ukraine celebrates Heroes’ Day, established in honor of Ukrainian fighters for the freedom and independence of our thousand-year-old country. This holiday is a symbol of the invincibility of the Ukrainian nation and its thirst for free life on its native land.
On this day, Ukraine also celebrates the Day of the Marines, the elite of the military. Previously, it was celebrated on November 16, but the Presidential Decree postponed the celebration to May 23. The date was changed for a reason – on this day in 1918, Hetman of the Ukrainian state Pavlo Skoropadskyi issued an order to begin forming a marine brigade consisting of three regiments for service.
